Press Release

January 04, 2022

5 Canadian teams and 1 United States team have  come together today to announce their agreement to establish a new league called the Can-Am Junior Hockey League, which will be governed by its founding teams. This league will continue to operate as a Tier 2 Junior A Hockey model.

The Vegreville Vipers, Hinton Timberwolves, Cold Lake Aeros, Barrhead Bombers, Edmonton Eagles and Vernal Oilers have joined as “Founding Teams” and the move to the new league is effective immediately.

The formation of the new league comes at a time when a change in leadership and direction was needed. The Founding Teams wish to thank the Western States Hockey League for its past efforts and dedication to the sport of hockey.

Further teams in both the United States and Canada are anticipated to join for the 2022/23 season as ongoing discussions continue.

The COVID pandemic has shown that a strategic vision and enhanced approach are required to provide value and support for the players wishing to move to the next level of hockey. Our objective is the improvement in the quality of hockey and the provision of a highly competitive, safe environment.

For the remainder of the 2021/22 season, the teams will govern themselves and the search for a league commissioner will begin after the conclusion of the season. The announcement of other teams shall occur after the vetting process is completed.

The Founding Teams thank the players, parents, fans, volunteers and staff members for their continuing support while this transition continues.
